Tips for Choosing the Right Industrial Mixer for Your Company

by | Oct 12, 2015 | Industrial Goods and Services

You might think that all industrial mixers are created equally, but this is often not the case. When mixing chemicals or even feed for animals, precision is extremely important. Each ingredient must be mixed thoroughly and distributed throughout the mixture for the end product to meet quality control standards. This is why it is necessary to make sure you have the right industrial mixer for your application.

Consider What You’re Mixing
The type of mixer needed depends on what you’re mixing. If you are mixing fine materials or even liquids, a drum mixer with an agitator or a continuous mixer would be appropriate. Large amounts of feed usually require a large batch mixer. These mixers are rated by capacity or weight.

Look at Production Size
Because most mixers are rated by weight and density, your production size is very important. If you produce large quantities of mixed goods, it is best to have an industrial mixer that can handle larger densities of materials. Therefore, a mixer that can handle 60 pounds per cubic foot requires 200 cubic feet of volume within the mixer. If you have a smaller mixer, producing enough product for demand becomes difficult. Consider current and future demands for a product before purchasing each mixer.

Time Constraints
Mixers that have lower mix times are preferable. Some horizontal mixers have output times as low as 30 to 60 seconds, but others could take an hour or more to mix the same amount of product. Output times depend on the mixer and the type of materials being mixed. Consider the demand for your products and the turnaround times that you promise to customers. Remember that lower mixing time also lowers costs.

Pin vs. Paddle
Pin and paddle mixers are popular mixers that you might consider. Paddle mixers can mix moist and dry ingredients, provide conditioning, and agglomerate materials. It is best suited for wet or liquid materials. Pin mixers contain a rotator shaft that has pins on it. These mixers are best when working with fine dry goods such as powders. They are also suited for agglomeration, but usually of dry powders rather than liquids.
