If you are unsure exactly what “55 communities” are, read on to learn exactly what these communities are and who they are for below.

What Exactly Are 55 Communities?

What 55 communities in Georgia and elsewhere entail is a community made for adults who are 55 years of age and older. Other names these communities go by are “active adult communities,” “age restricted communities,” and “independent living communities.”

Who Are These 55 Communities For?

As the name implies, these communities are made for those who are 55 years old and older. There are two important points, though: 1. These people are still able to take care of themselves; thus, this is not the same as assisted living facilities or at nursing homes where a caretaker must be on-site and available at all times to take care of or assist these seniors; many of the seniors at 55 communities are still able to take care of themselvesand live active lifestyles.

2. Some of the people at these communities are still working at least part-time; they do not have to be retired to be part of these communities. This is another key distinction from seniors living at assisted living facilities or nursing homes, as virtually all of those seniors are usually retired (often because of health reasons and unable to work any longer).

Another important note about these communities is that just one member of the family or household has to be 55 years old or older; other members of the household can be younger. Most of these are 40 or older, but children living in the household can be admitted so long as they are at least 18 years of age.
