Types of Piston Actuated Valves:
The piston valve can be classified into two groups based on how it operates: balanced type and unbalanced type. In contrast to unbalanced-type piston valves, which are meant for low-pressure applications, balanced-type piston valves are intended for use under high pressure.
How Does A Piston Valve Work?
Similar to a globe valve, a piston valve is utilized to shut off and control. It comprises two resilient valve rings, a metal piston, and a lantern bush. The surface involves the outer and inner surfaces of the sealing rings.
In order to control the low flow rate, a displacement at the opening exposes the narrow flow section. The majority of automatic valves are double-disc valves.
The double-disc construction makes it possible to distribute force across the seating surface as evenly as possible while directing it in the opposite direction.
When the valve is closed, the fluid pressure equalizes the flow pressure by pressing against the top and bottom of the top disc. An equalizing force ensures the valve operates smoothly even when it is open.
Power plants, refineries, pulp & paper mills, etc., employ piston valves principally for saturated and superheated steam and hot water distribution. Examples of particular applications include condensate manifolds, steam headers, desuperheaters, steam trap isolation, etc.
