Laser Or Hypertherm Plasma Cutter

by | May 23, 2017 | Machining Manufacturer

Hypertherm plasma cutters represent the latest developments in plasma cutter technology. The principle behind this equipment is the same as for regular plasma cutting tools. However, a Hypertherm plasma cutter utilizes plasma at higher elevated temperatures. This produces more precise and cleaner cuts. In fact, some fabricators prefer Hypertherm plasma to another popular cutting tool – laser.

Laser Cutters

Laser cutters use beams of light to produce fine featured cuts. They also produce excellent, refined holes. They are excellent for cutting into mild steel and perfect for certain applications. A fiber laser proves to be precise for cutting tight tolerances. It is also great where angle cutting is required. However, even with these positive characteristics, it does not offer the same advantages as Hypertherm plasma cutters.

Advantages of Hypertherm Plasma Cutters

Operators recognize the advantages of using a Hypertherm plasma cutter over a laser. They note the following qualities of Hypertherm plasma cutters.

  • Fine or High Definition Cutting: Produce high definition
  • Edge finishes: Can deliver an edge surface finish in the thicker ranges that are smoother, more consistent and durable than that delivered by a fiber laser
  • Cost: The initial layout and overall cost-effectiveness of a Hypertherm plasma system when mounted on a first-class cutting machine is generally less expensive than a similar laser system
  • Material: No matter what the product, Hypertherm plasma cutters will perform cleanly and accurately. This is true for both mild and dirty steel.

The Hypertherm Plasma Cutter

If your company is considering installing a new cutting system, why not consider one that uses plasma. While lasers do perform with excellence, a Hypertherm plasma system can match and even exceed the capabilities of a laser system in certain applications. The latest models of the Hypertherm plasma cutter readily address the increasing demands of modern industries to produce tighter tolerances and smoother edges. It can provide improved capabilities for a shop while not negatively affecting the budget.
