Herbal Supplements And FDA Approved Appetite Suppressants: What’s The Difference?

by | Aug 4, 2015 | Health Care

For people seeking to lose weight and looking for a way to curb hunger and cravings, there are two very distinct options. One is to select FDA approved appetite suppressants, and one is to choose a 100% natural herbal supplement.

The general population has the impression that FDA approved appetite suppressants are the better option, but this is largely based on a misunderstanding of just what FDA approval means. By taking a close look at what it is, there is a better way to compare and evaluate the two.

The Role of the FDA in Approvals

The FDA is primarily reviews research provided by companies and manufacturers of drugs and medical equipment and devices. The companies, in order to get approval, have to provide significant research based and repeatable data to show that the use of the medicine or the medical device is beneficial to the majority of users in the trials as well as in the general population.

This doesn’t mean, for example, that FDA approved appetite suppressants, are safe for all people. In fact, several FDA approved appetite suppressants, including the drug Meridia (Sibutramine) have been recalled because of increased risk for cardiovascular disease and stroke, despite previous and full FDA approval. The same is true with Pondimin (Fenfluramine) and Redux (Dexfenfluramine), both which were prescribed with Phentermine to create the appetite suppressant Fen-Phen.

Current FDA approved drugs for appetite suppression are by prescription only. They also have significant side effects to consider including cardiovascular disease, heart attack and stroke risks, digestive complications and in more than one, increased risk of seizures and neurological complications.

The Herbal Option

Herbal supplements that are used for appetite suppression, weight loss, and fat burning do not fall into the category of FDA approved appetite suppressants, because they are not prescribed for a specific treatment. They are also not drugs, but rather 100% natural ingredients that produce many of the same benefits as prescription and over-the-counter drugs with the FDA approval.

For herbal supplements, the FDA offers a facility certification, which ensures the company is using good manufacturing process to maintain consistency in processing and to meet high levels of quality standards.

Since herbal supplements, including those for appetite control and weight loss are processed to the top standards in the industry, they are highly beneficial for their users. Without the rigorous and lengthy clinic trial process, these supplements are also much lower cost for consumers, another advantage to consider over the FDA approved appetite suppressants available today.
