Feller Buncher Head – Efficient Logging Equipment

by | Feb 22, 2016 | Forestry Cutting Tools

There has clearly been an apparent evolution when it comes to the logging industry and logging equipment. This is evident as logging as an industry, once started out with axes, crosscut saws and chainsaws, gradually moved on to scoots, skidders and hotsaw. However, the development process did not stop there from scoots, skidders and hotsaw – logging finally turned to more mechanical and efficient methods for logging. One of those more efficient methods or techniques known as mechanical harvesting includes the use of a feller buncher head. A fell buncher is a motorized vehicle that has an attachment i.e. “head” that rapidly cuts and gathers the trees.

Mechanical Harvesting
As previously mentioned, when referring to mechanical harvesting, a person is typically referring to the feller buncher process of harvesting. This particular method of logging is often hailed as the best way to harvest large volumes of low grade woods. Moreover, if your harvest is mainly for the pulp or chip markets, then you will definitely want to consider this logging method as it is the most efficient way to produce large quantities of wood product.

Cut-to-length
With this specific logging technique, you can still harvest a significant amount of wood, but a cut-to-length system essentially has more finesse. In other words, with a cut-to-length system is more multifunctional in that you can use an excavator-style carrier i.e. a fell buncher or you can use a logging carrier that is used primarily in tight spaces. Additionally, cut-to-length, similar to hand cutting, is ideal for small woodlots, as well as managing limbs and branches. Hand cutting are typically used with high value hard woods. Mechanical harvesting, on the other hand, is what you use when you want to have the woods cleaned and well managed.

Purchasing a Feller Buncher Head
If you decide that mechanical harvesting is the better option for your specific logging job or project, then more than likely you need feller buncher head if you do not have one already. Purchasing this particular attachment is fairly easy with the right assistance. Generally, most logging equipment companies offer more than one model each with their own unique features and benefits.
